Local sales tax allocations up 10%

Austin Business Journal - 12:38 PM CDT Friday, May 11, 2007
Sales tax revenue in Texas got a boost in April.
According to Texas Comptroller Susan Combs, the state collected $1.7
billion in sales tax revenue in April, an increase of 10.3 percent
compared with April 2006.
"Sales tax revenue continues to show steady growth," Combs says. "This
is true at both the state and local levels, and it indicates that our
Texas economy is in good health."
Combs says local governments will receive $542.5 million in May sales
tax allocations, an increase of 8.1 percent compared with May 2006.
So far this calendar year, sales tax allocations to cities, counties,
transit systems and special purpose taxing districts are up 6.8
percent compared with a year ago.
Combs' office sent May sales tax allocations of $372.6 million to
Texas cities, an increase of 8.2 percent compared with May 2006.
Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax allocations are up 7.4 percent
compared with the same period last year.
Austin received $14.1 million in May sales tax allocations, a 13.1
percent increase compared with May of last year.
Texas counties received sales tax payments of $32.1 million, an
increase of 10.9 percent compared with one year ago.
Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 8.9 percent
higher than last year.
In addition, $16.3 million went to 116 special purpose taxing
districts throughout the state, an increase of 12.4 percent compared
with last May.
And 10 local transit systems received $121.4 million in sales tax
allocations, up 6.4 percent compared with a year ago.
May sales tax allocations to local governments represent March sales
that were reported to the comptroller in April by monthly tax filers
and January, February and March sales reported to the comptroller in
April by quarterly tax filers.
The comptroller's next sales tax allocation will be made June 8.
